Buc-ee’s ignores John Oliver to target small-town Ohio business

John Oliver recently challenged the convenience store chain Buc-ee’s to sue him over a parody mascot, but the company opted for a different target. Instead of engaging the HBO host, the Texas-based retailer has filed a trademark lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart, a long-standing fixture in Beavercreek, Ohio.

The legal action centers on a claim of brand confusion. Buc-ee’s argues that the local store’s cartoon beaver, which features a wide-eyed smile and a red color scheme, mimics its own protected intellectual property. For the owners of the Mini Mart, the lawsuit threatens a business that has served the local community for decades.

This litigation fits a recurring pattern of aggressive legal maneuvering by the chain against smaller competitors. While Oliver attempted to bait the company into a high-profile showdown using his character Mr. Nutterbutter, the corporation bypassed the national platform to focus on a smaller entity with fewer resources to mount a defense. This is not the first time a television personality has sparred with litigious figures; Oliver previously successfully defended a defamation suit brought by mining executive Bob Murray in 2017.
