Binance finance chief Kaiser Ng is leaving the cryptocurrency exchange for a new venture, the company said days after hackers stole $6.3 billion from its platform in what was described as a record heist. Justin Yek, formerly vice-president of finance at Airwallex, will become CFO.
Co-CEO Yi He said in a statement on Saturday that Ng had decided to leave after more than five years at Binance. A transition plan had been implemented over the previous half year, she said.
The leadership change was announced just over a week after Binance disclosed a major theft. The exchange said the October 29 breach began months earlier, with malware hidden in software downloads and fake recruitment efforts targeting engineers. Binance has pledged to reimburse affected customers in full.
The FBI blamed a North Korean hacking group for the theft; Pyongyang has denied the allegation. Ng has served as Binance CFO since January 2022 and previously worked at rival exchange Kraken, according to his LinkedIn profile.
