The integration simplifies a process that previously required external tools or multi-step workflows. OpenAI demonstrated the capability by having the chatbot animate a dancing cat, offering users an interface to tweak the GIF's rhythm and composition before sharing. Beyond animation, the Images 2.6 update focuses on performance, with OpenAI reporting that image generation speeds across its web, desktop, and mobile platforms have significantly improved.
OpenAI Adds Native GIF Generation to ChatGPT
Users can now generate, edit, and export animated GIFs directly within ChatGPT, marking a shift from static image creation to dynamic media production. The feature, launching alongside the upgraded Images 2.6 model, allows for granular control over playback speed and frame-by-frame adjustments through simple text prompts or uploaded photos.

The scale of this activity remains substantial, as the company now processes over 4 billion image requests per week between ChatGPT and its API, up from 3 billion in September. To support developers, OpenAI is also introducing two new specialized models, Flare and Sunburst, designed to deliver higher-quality outputs at faster rates. These tools are currently rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users, signaling a broader push to make the platform a hub for creative content rather than just text-based analysis.
