SpaceX and Qualcomm Partner to Challenge US Wireless Giants

SpaceX is partnering with Qualcomm to deploy specialized 5G infrastructure across the United States, aiming to transform its Starlink satellite network into a formidable competitor for major carriers like AT&T and Verizon. The multi-year deal targets the installation of Qualcomm’s Dragonwing technology at tens of thousands of cell sites by 2027.

The collaboration leverages Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platform—a suite of hardware and software engineered to optimize network capacity and coverage—to support SpaceX’s direct-to-cell satellite constellation. This strategic move follows a series of aggressive maneuvers by the Elon Musk-owned company, including significant spectrum acquisitions and reports of interest in purchasing Boost Mobile.

Durga Malladi, Qualcomm’s executive vice president, stated that the partnership aims to advance current 5G capabilities while simultaneously laying the groundwork for 6G integration. By embedding this terrestrial infrastructure into its satellite-based model, SpaceX seeks to bridge the gap between orbital connectivity and traditional mobile carrier services, positioning itself to disrupt the dominance of established industry players.
