Apple Tightens Age Ratings for Dating Apps and AI Companions

Starting November 16, Apple will force developers to disclose whether their applications facilitate real-world location sharing or romantic interactions with virtual entities. This shift aims to shield minors from high-risk content, effectively pushing apps featuring dating or simulated relationships into a mandatory 18-plus age category on the App Store.

The updated questionnaire within App Store Connect targets a broader spectrum of digital experiences than previous policies. While Apple historically reserved the 18-plus designation for gambling, substance references, or explicit nudity, the new criteria capture the growing market of AI-powered romantic simulators. By formalizing these declarations, the company intends to mitigate potential mental health risks associated with virtual companionship platforms.

Developers have until January 12, 2027, to complete these declarations for all existing software. Beyond romance-focused AI, the policy impacts location-sharing features, which will now face age-rating adjustments tailored to specific regional regulations. This move signals a stricter enforcement approach to user safety, ensuring that even non-explicit apps with significant social or emotional influence meet age-appropriate standards.
