The strategy aims to bolster the library of Meta’s $1,300 VR hardware by offering premium cinematic experiences alongside existing gaming and interactive content. By positioning these headsets as high-end personal theaters, the partnership hopes to revitalize interest in 3D technology, which has largely struggled to maintain mainstream traction outside of specialized cinema screenings.
Meta and Lionsgate Partner to Bring 3D Cinema to VR Headsets
Hollywood is taking another swing at 3D, this time tethered to the virtual reality market. Meta has secured a deal with Lionsgate to convert upcoming theatrical releases for its headsets, starting with the next installment of a blockbuster franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Following their initial theatrical runs, these converted films will transition directly to Meta’s ecosystem. This move signals an attempt to shift the perception of VR devices from purely gaming-focused peripherals into comprehensive entertainment hubs, leveraging Lionsgate’s intellectual property to drive hardware adoption among film enthusiasts.
