Intel Struggles to Meet Surging Demand for Budget Wildcat Lake Chips

Intel is selling every entry-level Wildcat Lake processor it produces, as the company grapples with a supply crunch that shows no signs of easing. CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed that demand for the budget-focused chips has completely outstripped current manufacturing capacity, leaving the company effectively sold out of the hardware.

Intel Struggles to Meet Surging Demand for Budget Wildcat Lake Chips

CFO David Zinsner highlighted the rapid growth of the Wildcat Lake line, noting that its cost-optimized design arrived at a critical moment for the PC market. These processors currently power affordable Windows laptops such as the Dell XPS 13 and the HP Omnibook 5 14. Despite their competitive pricing, these machines often ship with 8GB of RAM, a configuration that frequently struggles to handle modern workloads efficiently.

The broader industry remains mired in a persistent memory shortage that Intel does not expect to resolve in the immediate future. Zinsner expressed a pessimistic outlook for next year, suggesting that significant supply chain improvements are unlikely to materialize until at least 2028. This timeline remains slightly more hopeful than the projection from SK Hynix, which expects the memory crisis to persist through 2030.

Beyond component constraints, the company is managing a shifting landscape for personal computing. While Tan acknowledged an overall slowdown in PC demand, he attributed the current supply volatility to the unprecedented demand for AI-driven hardware. Despite these headwinds, Zinsner remains confident in a long-term renaissance for the PC sector.
