TikTok Challenges Yelp with New Must Eat Dining Guide

TikTok is turning its massive library of viral food content into a direct competitor for traditional navigation and review platforms. The newly launched Must Eat feature synthesizes 40 million posts and reviews into a functional discovery tool, allowing users to locate, book, and evaluate local dining spots directly within the app.

The interface organizes recommendations into two distinct categories: everyday eats and elevated dining. By integrating map searches, reservation capabilities, and direct links to creator videos, the platform aims to bridge the gap between digital discovery and physical visits. According to TikTok US CEO Adam Presser, the tool acts as a living archive of community discourse between creators, restaurateurs, and diners. Early rollouts are limited to New York City, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area, featuring popular destinations like Golden Diner and Semma.

This expansion builds on the company’s previous efforts to monetize location-based content, such as the TikTok Go hotel booking feature. The move is a logical progression for the platform, which already exerts significant influence over culinary trends and menu design. Last year alone, 27 million US diners visited a new establishment specifically due to platform content. While the feature mirrors the utility of Yelp or The Infatuation, TikTok asserts that businesses cannot pay for placement, maintaining that the lists are driven by organic community engagement.
