Meta Postpones Controversial Terms Following Publisher Backlash

Facing intense pressure from media organizations, Meta has pushed back the implementation of its updated business terms to November 20. The company’s original October 30 deadline triggered fears among publishers that the platform intended to leverage their content for artificial intelligence training without explicit consent or compensation.

The News/Media Alliance recently petitioned CEO Mark Zuckerberg, warning that the proposed contractual language could inflict severe harm on news outlets. While Meta attempted to clarify its position by removing specific references to "training" from the document, legal experts remained skeptical, noting the revisions did not sufficiently close the loophole for data harvesting.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts stated the extension is intended to clarify how the company utilizes web crawlers. The firm intends to emphasize that publishers retain the ability to use robots.txt files to restrict scrapers. Beyond domestic concerns, the backlash reached international regulators, with digital advertisers and publishers across the UK and the European Union demanding formal intervention to halt the policy shift.
