HSBC: Gold remains a strategic hedge despite recent market volatility

Gold continues to serve as a vital component of a diversified portfolio, though investors should abandon the notion that the metal acts as a reliable short-term buffer during equity market sell-offs, according to recent analysis from HSBC Asset Management.

HSBC: Gold remains a strategic hedge despite recent market volatility

While gold prices have retreated from earlier highs, the investment case for the metal remains tied to the ongoing "debasement trade." Strategists at HSBC argue that geopolitical fragmentation and the necessity for central banks to diversify their reserves will continue to provide a floor for prices. Despite this, the metal has struggled to maintain its traditional role as a hedge against stock market drawdowns, largely because leveraged investors often liquidate gold positions to cover margin calls when equities tumble.

HSBC Global Chief Investment Officer Willem Sels and Global Head of Wealth Insights Lucia Ku noted that U.S. Treasury yields currently act as the primary driver of price action. As real yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets increases, keeping gold range-bound in the near term. Nevertheless, the firm maintains a bullish outlook through 2026, citing steady ETF inflows and structural demand from institutional buyers in China and India. James Steel, HSBC’s chief precious metals analyst, emphasized that gold’s liquidity makes it a unique hard asset, even if its historical correlation with oil and other commodities has fractured in the modern economic landscape.
