Drivers can trigger the feature by selecting the Gemini icon within the Google Maps display on their vehicle’s infotainment system. The integration allows for complex, multi-step queries, such as requesting destination recommendations and immediate turn-by-turn navigation while filtering for specific preferences like avoiding toll roads. Beyond routing, the assistant functions as a tool for reporting traffic disruptions or searching for amenities during a trip.
Google brings conversational Gemini to Apple CarPlay
Nearly a year after debuting its AI assistant on Android Auto, Google has expanded Gemini’s reach to Apple CarPlay. US drivers can now access the conversational navigation tool directly through the Google Maps interface, with a broader international rollout currently underway to bring hands-free assistance to a wider user base.

Despite this expansion, the current CarPlay implementation lacks the deeper Personal Intelligence features recently announced for Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. Those advanced capabilities—which allow the assistant to pull context from Gmail, Calendar, and Photos—remain absent from the iOS-compatible version. Google has not yet confirmed whether these personalized data features will eventually migrate to the CarPlay ecosystem.
