Tesla’s Roadster defies gravity in Waco stunt show

A Tesla Roadster hit 60mph in 0.81 seconds and briefly hovered above the pavement during a demonstration in Waco, Texas. The spectacle, which featured the supercar performing a 'kick flip' over a line of parked vehicles, showcased SpaceX-supplied thrusters and a fan-based suction system capable of generating two Gs of force.

The event functioned more as a high-budget stunt performance than a traditional vehicle launch. Tesla offered no details regarding final pricing, trim levels, or concrete production schedules, leaving the 2028 target date as the only timeline for the public to reference. Beneath the bodywork, the machine utilizes 600 liters of compressed air stored in high-pressure tanks to feed ten nozzles, allowing for maneuvers that deviate sharply from standard automotive engineering. Engineers Lars Moravy and Elon Musk described the design as a fusion of aerospace technology and traditional hypercar aesthetics, drawing inspiration from the SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft.

While the demonstration proved the feasibility of Musk’s long-standing promises, regulatory hurdles remain substantial. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have yet to weigh in on a vehicle that essentially functions as an amateur rocket. Despite the technical prowess on display, the automotive landscape has shifted significantly since the Roadster was first teased in 2017. Competitors like Rimac and Porsche have since established dominance in the high-performance electric sector. Tesla’s latest effort serves as a reminder of the company's engineering ambition, though whether this design can survive the transition from a stunt prototype to a road-legal reality remains an open question.
