iPhone OS 1.0 Recreated in the Browser

Nearly two decades after its debut, the original iPhone operating system has migrated from the dusty shelves of Apple history into a modern web browser. Developer Kelindi achieved the feat by compiling an emulated ARM11 CPU and S5L8900 chipset directly into WebAssembly, allowing the vintage software to run within a single tab.

While the experience is far from polished—showing the expected cracks and instability of a twenty-year-old mobile environment—it serves as a functional digital artifact. The project relies on a complex emulation stack that breathes life into the rigid, early interface of the first iPhone. Navigating the classic home screen and testing the primitive touch-based interactions reveals how far mobile design has evolved since the 2007 launch. This browser-based version offers a rare, hands-on look at the foundational code that effectively standardized the modern smartphone experience.
