The U.S. Labor Department reported a 1.3% monthly increase in the headline Producer Price Index for September, a figure that dwarfs the 0.6% gain anticipated by analysts. This represents the most significant monthly advance since March 2022. Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, climbed 0.7%, also exceeding consensus estimates of 0.3%.
Gold Holds Gains Despite Hotter-Than-Expected US Producer Prices
Gold prices are maintaining overnight momentum, trading above $4,100 an ounce even as September producer prices surged by 6.3% annually. This sharp jump in wholesale inflation significantly outpaced economist forecasts, highlighting a persistent inflationary environment that continues to challenge the Federal Reserve's current monetary policy trajectory.

Spot gold last traded at $4,151.90 an ounce, reflecting a daily gain of more than 1%. While persistent inflation typically creates a headwind for non-yielding assets by increasing opportunity costs, some market observers suggest these figures could eventually bolster gold if skepticism grows regarding the Federal Reserve's ability to contain the inflationary threat.
