Google DeepMind Establishes Robotics Hub in Cambridge

Aaron Saunders, the former Boston Dynamics CTO who joined Google this year, is spearheading a new robotics laboratory in Cambridge. The facility aims to centralize the company's hardware and software integration efforts, marking a significant escalation in Google’s push to move beyond purely digital AI models.

The project serves as a physical anchor for Google’s broader strategy to bridge the gap between advanced artificial intelligence and physical automation. Saunders described the initiative as a commitment to building a first-class environment for engineering talent dedicated to pushing robotics to the next level. This expansion follows the company’s recent integration of the Alphabet-backed robotics startup Intrinsic and the ongoing development of Gemini Robotics AI models. By concentrating these efforts in Cambridge, Google aims to unify its disparate research streams under a single roof, signaling a shift toward more aggressive hardware development.
