The project avoids the traditional hurdles of modification by eliminating the need for soldering, though opening a legacy device remains a delicate task. Beyond physical connectivity, the firmware supports high-fidelity FLAC playback and enables audio output through both the original 3.5mm jack and modern USB-C headsets. Integrating Wi-Fi adds podcast downloading and support for Google Cast and AirPlay, effectively bridging the gap between local storage and cloud-based streaming.
Sprout Pi brings modern wireless connectivity to vintage iPods
The Sprout Pi and Sprout Pico motherboards promise to modernize aging iPods by integrating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB-C into a single, solder-free upgrade. By replacing the internal hardware of 3rd- and 4th-generation devices, these boards aim to bring streaming capabilities to hardware long disconnected from the modern digital ecosystem.

The higher-end Sprout Pi model pushes further by adding support for Spotify and Apple Music, though this feature risks clashing with the primary appeal of the iPod: a focused, distraction-free listening experience devoid of modern algorithmic interference. Currently, the upgrade path is restricted to 3rd- and 4th-generation iPods and the iPod mini. The developers plan to launch a crowdfunding campaign via Crowd Supply, with pricing details still pending.
