The new system targets the long-game tactics used by scammers who build trust through slow-burn conversations before striking. By utilizing secure cloud analysis, the software examines messages from unrecognized senders to detect hidden malicious intent. To address privacy concerns, Google states that data processed in this dedicated space remains encrypted and inaccessible to the company, with on-device Gemini Nano models providing a secondary layer of security by inspecting URLs for malicious signals before they are opened.
Google integrates Gemini AI to block SMS scams on Android
Google is rolling out an enhanced scam detection feature for Android devices, leveraging cloud-based Gemini AI to analyze suspicious text messages in real time. This opt-in tool aims to identify sophisticated fraud patterns that traditional on-device filters miss, while simultaneously expanding basic protection to hundreds of millions of additional handsets.
Beyond message monitoring, the update introduces broader system-level safeguards. Android will now block unauthorized attempts to enable call forwarding and hide sensitive information during screen-sharing sessions in Chrome and WebView. These features, previously exclusive to Pixel devices, are reaching a wider ecosystem that includes manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Motorola, and Vivo, marking a significant push to standardize mobile security across the Android landscape.
