WhatsApp opens calls to users without accounts via link access

Meta has introduced a guest calling feature for WhatsApp, allowing users to invite participants who lack an account or the application itself. By sharing a direct link, hosts can bring external contacts into conversations, provided the guests access the session through a web browser rather than the mobile platform.

The integration maintains core functionality, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, and hand-raising tools, while preserving end-to-end encryption for all parties. To ensure security, the host retains full control over the session. Guests remain in a virtual waiting room until the host grants entry, and participants can be removed at any time. To protect privacy, guest access is restricted; they cannot view other participants' phone numbers, send text messages, or invite additional people to the call.

Meta plans to expand these capabilities further by introducing Google and Outlook calendar integrations later this year. Once the WhatsApp plugin is installed, users will be able to embed call links directly into calendar invitations, streamlining the scheduling process for both account holders and their guest participants.
