Mia Goth decries Instagram’s failure to police AI-generated impersonation

A verified Instagram account masquerading as actress Mia Goth recently circulated a fabricated image of the star, fueling false tabloid reports regarding her personal life. The incident highlights a growing crisis in platform governance, as Meta’s verification system inadvertently granted credibility to a sophisticated digital forgery.

Mia Goth decries Instagram’s failure to police AI-generated impersonation

The image depicted Goth wearing a shirt emblazoned with the phrase “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN,” set to the soundtrack of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” Despite being an AI-generated fabrication, the post garnered hundreds of thousands of likes and deceived major entertainment outlets, which reported the content as authentic. The account, miagoth_, maintained a blue checkmark, a status that historically signaled an official entity, leading to widespread confusion despite the page being labeled as fan-run.

Christine Tripicchio, a representative for Goth, confirmed that the actress maintains no social media presence on any platform. Representatives have filed multiple complaints with Instagram to shutter the account, yet the platform’s verification criteria allowed the impersonator to retain its status. Tripicchio labeled the situation “incomprehensible,” arguing that the company prioritizes the reach of manipulated likenesses over the basic integrity and protection of the public figures it verifies.
