While the September uptick provides a minor reprieve for the housing sector, the landscape remains fragile. Sales figures are still down 2.2% compared to last year, marking August and September as the slowest months for home transactions throughout 2024. National Association of Realtors Chief Economist Lawrence Yun noted that recent spikes in mortgage rates are actively disqualifying potential buyers from the market.
Gold Holds Ground as U.S. Housing Market Stutters
A 1.5% rise in existing home sales to a 3.99 million annual rate failed to shake the gold market on Thursday. Despite the positive shift in data, spot gold prices remained nearly flat at $4,166.60 an ounce, reflecting a market that continues to balance economic news against persistent safe-haven interest.

This cooling effect stems from the Federal Reserve's ongoing efforts to curb inflation through tighter monetary policy. Coupled with chronically low housing inventory that keeps prices elevated, these factors have left many prospective buyers sidelined. Investors appear to be weighing these structural housing challenges against the slight monthly growth, keeping gold prices in a state of relative equilibrium despite the broader economic pressure.
