Mechanism’s Basecase brings modular utility to the Switch 2

After months of silence from accessory makers, Mechanism has finally launched the $49 Basecase for the Nintendo Switch 2. This snap-on shell prioritizes structural integrity and modularity, offering a robust alternative to early-market cases that struggled with build quality and controller security.

The Basecase distinguishes itself through a secure clamping mechanism near the bottom USB-C port, ensuring the shell stays rigid during use. Unlike flimsy competitors, this design prevents the rear plate from flexing when attached to the company’s existing ecosystem of mounts, such as the $19 Basegrip. The shell remains fully compatible with the console's kickstand, ports, and ventilation, while allowing users to replace the rear plate with custom 3D-printed designs, including options for mounting Lego bricks or storing game cartridges.

Ergonomics receive a significant boost through swappable Joy-Con grips that add necessary bulk for comfort. Each grip features a dedicated slot for a game cartridge, a thoughtful touch for portable play. While the case prevents docked use with the standard Nintendo dock, Mechanism includes a USB-C extender to bridge the connection, though third-party docks from brands like Jsaux or Genki bypass this requirement entirely. By addressing common failure points—such as the risk of controllers detaching under the console's weight—Mechanism has delivered a refined product for those invested in a modular gaming setup.
