Microsoft bets on Maia 300 to bypass Nvidia reliance

With the unveiling of its third-generation Maia 300 chip, Microsoft is signaling a strategic shift away from third-party hardware dependencies. By 2027, the company intends to transition its massive cloud ecosystem to this in-house architecture, aiming to dominate inference workloads through superior power efficiency and specialized agentic processing capabilities.

Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud group, claims the new hardware will deliver 40 percent more tokens per megawatt than current industry-leading GPU-based systems. The chip utilizes a novel chiplet architecture designed to tackle the specific demands of modern AI, such as long-context reasoning and latency-sensitive conversational tasks. In its most robust configuration, the Maia 300 is projected to provide seven times the rack-scale throughput of its predecessor.

While the Maia 200 currently supports active production environments like GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry, the company views the 300 series as the definitive foundation for its future services. The rollout scheduled for 2027 will see the Maia family scale into multi-gigawatt deployments, effectively repositioning Microsoft as a vertically integrated AI infrastructure provider that no longer relies primarily on Nvidia or AMD silicon.
