The potential resolution surfaced on Monday when Lim Chee Wee, a lawyer representing 1MDB, informed the Kuala Lumpur High Court that discussions regarding a settlement are underway. While specific terms remain undisclosed, the development follows a 2021 lawsuit filed by the fund against Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions. At the time of the initial filing, the bank maintained it was unaware of any legitimate basis for the claims brought against it.
Malaysia's 1MDB Engages Deutsche Bank in Settlement Talks
Malaysia’s state-run investment fund 1MDB is actively negotiating a settlement with Deutsche Bank to resolve a long-standing legal battle. The move marks a fresh turn in the nation’s multi-year effort to claw back billions of dollars siphoned away during a massive corruption scandal that spanned global financial markets.

US prosecutors previously alleged that at least $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB between 2009 and 2014, a scheme involving former Prime Minister Najib Razak and various high-level associates. Malaysia continues to assert that billions more remain missing. With a court hearing regarding the lawsuit currently scheduled for October 26, the ongoing talks suggest a potential shift in strategy for both parties. Representatives for both 1MDB and the bank have declined to provide further comment on the status of the negotiations.
