The upcoming transition moves away from individual AI feature caps, introducing a consolidated usage allowance that lets families apply their quota to the tools they prioritize. Subscribers will gain the ability to manage AI permissions for younger users, providing a layer of oversight alongside the expanded access. These changes aim to simplify the subscription utility, though they come with a significant shift in cloud infrastructure.
Microsoft 365 Family plans to broaden Copilot access
After restricting generative AI tools to primary account holders for the past year, Microsoft is shifting its policy to allow Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers to share Copilot benefits with up to five additional plan members, effectively democratizing access to advanced automation features across entire households.

Beginning May 2, 2027, the current 1 TB per-person OneDrive allocation will be replaced by a 2 TB shared storage pool. While Microsoft frames this as a flexible approach to accommodate varying individual needs, the move effectively reduces the total available space for larger families. By centralizing the storage limit, the company creates a framework that may force power users to purchase additional capacity sooner than under the previous per-account model.
