Amazon Abandons Fire Tablets for New Alexa-Branded Android Lineup

Amazon is retiring its long-standing Fire tablet brand, pivoting instead toward a new series of Alexa-branded devices. Panos Panay, the company’s head of consumer electronics, confirmed the shift, acknowledging that the previous hardware failed to meet the evolving demands of users who grew frustrated with the platform’s restrictive ecosystem.

The upcoming lineup marks a fundamental departure from Amazon’s proprietary strategy by running a standard version of Android. This move grants users native access to the Google Play Store, finally resolving a major pain point for consumers who previously relied on browsers to access essential services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Drive. By abandoning the custom Fire OS, Amazon is effectively relinquishing the walled-garden approach that defined the brand for years.

Beyond software, the decision addresses long-standing criticism regarding hardware quality and intrusive lock-screen advertising. While Amazon intends to maintain security support for existing Fire tablets, Panay emphasized there will be no future hardware refreshes for the legacy line. Although the company plans further device announcements this fall, Panay dismissed speculation regarding an Amazon-branded laptop or computer, signaling that the hardware roadmap remains focused on mobile and smart-home integration.
