Amazon pivots to Android with new Alexa Tablet lineup

Amazon is abandoning the Fire brand after 15 years to launch the Alexa Tablet, a new hardware series designed to challenge the iPad. Moving away from its proprietary ecosystem, the company is integrating full Google Play support and a completely redesigned hardware architecture to anchor its devices in the modern computing market.

The shift toward a full Android experience marks a significant departure for the company. Panos Panay, senior vice president of hardware and Alexa, confirmed that integrating the Google Play Store was a fundamental necessity for the new devices. While the tablets remain heavily integrated with Amazon’s own services—including quick access to Prime Video and e-commerce portals—the software environment is now indistinguishable from standard Android offerings.

Development of the lineup spanned two and a half years, with Panay mandating a clean-slate approach for the engineering teams. By discarding legacy components and existing tablet designs, the company aims to position the hardware as a premium alternative in a crowded market. The initial rollout includes three distinct models, all of which are scheduled to hit the retail market on October 14th, led by the 8.7-inch Tablet 8.
