Amazon disables Alexa voice control for Echo 3.5mm auxiliary inputs

Owners of older Amazon Echo devices are losing the ability to manage line-in audio through voice commands. While the 3.5mm auxiliary port remains functional for physical playback, the digital bridge that allowed Alexa to play, pause, or control the stream from external sources is being quietly phased out by the company.

The change surfaced after users reported receiving notifications from Amazon regarding the limitation. An unnamed spokesperson reportedly confirmed the shift, though the company has declined to provide an official explanation for why the feature was curtailed. Despite the loss of voice-based management, the physical input port remains active, and control settings within the Alexa mobile application continue to function as intended.

This adjustment does not appear to affect audio output capabilities, such as connecting an Echo Dot to an external speaker system. Amazon stopped including 3.5mm ports on new Echo hardware years ago, signaling a broader move away from legacy physical connectivity. This update follows the company’s decision last year to remove the option for users to opt out of sending voice recordings to the cloud, further tightening the parameters of how these aging devices interact with the broader ecosystem.
