Apple’s Screen Time update turns family devices into a bottleneck

A single outdated MacBook four hours away is currently blocking an entire household from accessing Apple’s new parental controls. The requirement that every device in an Apple Family Sharing group run the latest OS creates a digital hostage situation for parents trying to manage their children’s screen time.

The issue stems from a rigid architecture: to enable the revamped features on a 15-year-old daughter’s iPhone, the user must ensure every piece of hardware—from iPads and Apple Watches to Vision Pro headsets—is running iOS 27. Because an 18-year-old son at college has yet to update his MacBook Neo, the family’s entire configuration remains locked out of the new interface.

Apple spokesperson Katie Lowry acknowledged the friction, stating the company is working to resolve delays some families are experiencing. However, for households holding onto older, incompatible hardware, the problem is permanent. Unless every device is updated or removed from the family group, the new controls remain inaccessible, leaving parents like this one navigating a complex web of software dependencies just to manage a teenager's device usage.
