Keurig Launches Alta Espresso Maker Featuring Compostable Coffee Pucks

Keurig is attempting to shed its reputation for plastic waste with the launch of the Alta, a new $499.99 brewing system that abandons traditional aluminum pods. Instead, the machine utilizes AltaRounds—compressed coffee pucks encased in a plant-based, seaweed-derived coating designed to be fully compostable after brewing.

The Alta marks a shift toward high-end home brewing, positioning itself as both a standard coffee maker and an espresso machine. By forcing hot water through the pucks at high pressure, the device aims to replicate café-style extraction, complete with a built-in milk frother for lattes and cappuccinos. While the pucks currently rely on plastic secondary packaging for freshness, the company intends to transition to paper-based wrappers in the near future.

Prospective buyers can preorder the unit starting today in graphite or sandstone finishes, with the first shipments scheduled for October 21st. The initial offering is restricted to a premium bundle that includes branded glassware and six varieties of coffee rounds. Despite the added mechanical complexity required for espresso production, Keurig maintains that the interface remains consistent with the simplified, single-button convenience of its legacy appliances.
