The Labor Department’s latest report arrived better than market expectations, yet the precious metal continues to climb. Spot gold last traded at $4,182.50 per ounce, marking a 0.65% gain during the session. This stability is particularly notable given that a robust labor market typically emboldens the Federal Reserve to maintain a hawkish stance on interest rates.
Gold Prices Defy Labor Market Strength
With initial jobless claims hitting 297,000 for the week ending September 26, the gold market is showing unexpected resilience. Despite a cooling labor market, investors are shrugging off the pressure from rising U.S. 10-year yields, which currently hover near 5.30%—a level not seen in two decades.

Analysts suggest that the current environment creates a unique dynamic for traders. While higher opportunity costs usually dampen demand for non-yielding assets, the metal remains insulated from the typical sell-off associated with positive employment data. With the Federal Reserve’s upcoming monetary policy meeting on the horizon, market participants are weighing the probability of at least one more rate hike before the year concludes against the metal's persistent upward momentum.
