DoorDash expands beyond the app with text-based ordering and drones

Ordering takeout is moving out of the app and into the messaging thread, as DoorDash unveils a new beta service allowing users to place food orders via text. This shift follows the June debut of the company’s AI chatbot, which handles recommendations and cart management directly within the conversation interface.

The text ordering feature functions by processing requests for specific dishes or mood-based suggestions, then finalizing the checkout process without requiring the user to open the DoorDash application. The system is designed to retain user preferences to streamline future transactions. Currently, the service is restricted to a waitlist for iOS users in the United States, with company representatives yet to clarify the timeline for a broader rollout or Android support.

Beyond texting, the company is preparing to launch DoorDash Air in northern California. This drone delivery pilot will feature partners like Chipotle and Popeyes, targeting the 80 percent of restaurant orders small enough for aerial transport. While testing indicates that meals can be delivered to a customer's doorstep within five minutes, the company has not provided a firm date for when the service will be accessible to the general public.
