Sixty-one percent of likely voters oppose the construction of facilities dedicated to artificial intelligence, according to a survey conducted by The New York Times and Siena University. The data highlights a deepening divide, where environmental concerns and community impact increasingly outweigh the industry's rapid expansion plans.
Public anxiety centers on tangible local costs rather than abstract digital disruption. Water consumption and environmental degradation top the list of grievances at 32 percent, followed by community disruption and a general distrust of AI systems. These findings align with broader trends observed in March and May, where polling indicated that AI infrastructure projects struggle to gain traction against concerns over ICE and local land use. Despite the intensity of this opposition, voters currently rank data center construction as a secondary priority compared to broader midterm election issues.
