Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Variant

The architectural shift to a 2nm process brings both chips into direct competition with Apple’s A20 Pro and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro. Despite identical CPU configurations, the Extreme model distinguishes itself by supporting 8K video capture at 60fps and 4K at 240fps, alongside the Advanced Professional Video codec. A larger shared memory pool for the NPU and specialized matrix cores in the GPU provide the headroom necessary for heavier AI workloads and fluid high-end gaming.

Manufacturers have already begun aligning their product roadmaps with this new silicon. Motorola confirmed the Signature 27 flagship will utilize the Extreme variant, while other major players—including Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, and OnePlus—have pledged to integrate these chips into their upcoming devices. The narrow performance gap between the standard and Extreme versions suggests a market where the distinction will likely hinge on individual device manufacturers' priorities for camera hardware and AI-driven features.
