The U.S. Labor Department reported that 162,000 jobs were created in August, significantly surpassing expectations of 55,000. The surprise strength of the report caused gold to tumble by more than $100 in just 30 minutes, though the metal stabilized above key support levels to close the North American session at $4,423.10 an ounce.
Analysts suggest the volatility reflects a market grappling with the Federal Reserve's dual mandate. While a healthy labor market grants the Fed more leeway to combat inflation, it also invites the possibility of interest rate hikes. Governor Christopher Waller recently signaled that the September Consumer Price Index report will be a deciding factor for future policy, noting a willingness to hold rates steady if inflation cools, but a readiness to hike if data comes in hot.
