The reallocation involves a significant shift in the bank's global distribution strategy. Previously, the institution held 31% of its holdings in New York and 20% in Ottawa; those figures have now dropped to 18.5% each. Conversely, the portion of reserves stored in London has climbed to 32%, matching the 32% held domestically in the Netherlands.
Governor Olaf Sleijpen described the move as a defensive measure to strengthen institutional resilience. While the bank does not anticipate an immediate need to liquidate these assets, the decision reflects a desire to avoid the logistical delays associated with accessing gold stored in North America. The transfer was executed through a combination of physical transport and a complex series of sales and repurchases, which the bank noted was designed to mitigate risk and manage costs.
