July's PCE index rose 0.2% monthly and 3.7% year-over-year, outpacing forecasts of 0.1% and 3.6% respectively. Core PCE followed a similar trend, climbing 0.2% on the month and 3.3% annually. This data shift has effectively narrowed the Federal Reserve's room to maintain current interest rates, prompting a retreat in gold from its recent highs. While spot gold dropped 0.52% to trade near $4,633.50 an ounce, the metal remains precariously positioned above the $4,567 support level.
Gold Stumbles as Hotter PCE Data Revives Fed Hike Concerns
Spot gold prices softened in early Wednesday trading after July PCE inflation data arrived hotter than expected, forcing traders to recalibrate their outlook on Federal Reserve policy. The surprise uptick in price pressures pushed Treasury yields higher, dampening the recent momentum that had fueled safe-haven demand for precious metals.

Market participants are now fixated on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming speech at Jackson Hole this Friday. The inflation print has injected a layer of uncertainty into the broader technical setup, where gold is currently struggling to regain the $4,661 resistance mark. Outside the U.S., the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to bolster a geopolitical premium in energy markets, with Brent crude hovering around $90 and WTI near $84. This creates a complex environment for gold: while supply-chain risks in the Gulf support defensive assets, the corresponding inflation impulse from elevated energy costs reinforces the case for a 'higher-for-longer' interest rate environment.
