The feature is part of the new Xfinity Shield service, designed to function similarly to standalone motion sensors. By analyzing fluctuations in the Wi-Fi signal between the gateway and connected devices, the system sends notifications to the user’s smartphone. Users can manage the sensing capabilities through three app-based modes: Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch. The technology is compatible only with XB7 gateways or newer and remains strictly opt-in.
Comcast Turns Existing Wi-Fi Routers Into Home Motion Sensors
Millions of Xfinity customers can now transform their home routers into activity monitors without purchasing new hardware. Starting August 18, a free update to the Xfinity Internet app activates Wi-Fi Motion, a feature that detects signal disruptions to track movement throughout the home via the gateway.

Kohposh Kuda, SVP of consumer products at Xfinity, noted that the company spent three years refining the underlying algorithms to improve reliability after earlier industry attempts by firms like Linksys failed to gain traction. While Comcast positions this as a foundational security layer for the average household, it stops short of replacing dedicated alarm systems. For users requiring professional monitoring, the company continues to offer Xfinity Shield Select, a $15-a-month subscription that includes physical cameras and 24/7 urgent response services.
