The proposed move encompasses the entire production cycle, including component sourcing and final assembly for future hardware lines. Internal efforts are already underway to shift existing server output to alternative regions, while the company simultaneously intensifies its push to diversify Xbox console production beyond Chinese borders.
Microsoft Pivots Surface Production Away From China
Facing mounting trade friction and the threat of aggressive new tariffs, Microsoft is planning to relocate the manufacturing of its Surface hardware and data center servers outside of China. The transition, slated for 2026, marks a significant shift in the company’s global supply chain strategy amid escalating geopolitical volatility.

This strategic pivot follows President Trump’s recent proposal of a 100 percent tariff on Chinese imports, alongside tightening export controls on software. Beijing has responded with its own measures, including new port fees and stricter regulations on rare earth minerals, heightening the pressure on American tech giants. Microsoft is not acting in isolation; Apple is similarly expanding its manufacturing footprint into Vietnam. Reports indicate that Apple intends to produce its upcoming smart home display hub, security cameras, and advanced tabletop robotics in the country to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing hubs.
