Top FINRA investigator pivots to fintech startup Finalis

After six years of policing Wall Street’s most complex market manipulations, Steven Price has stepped down from his post as senior vice president at FINRA. He joins San Francisco-based dealmaking platform Finalis as chief compliance officer, marking a significant transition from regulatory oversight to the burgeoning fintech infrastructure sector.

During his tenure at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Price served as a central figure in supervising thousands of investigations, ranging from insider trading to broader securities law violations. He notably spearheaded the National Cause Program, where he architected the watchdog’s inaugural AI-driven system designed to centralize and synthesize market misconduct referrals. His move to Finalis signals a broader industry shift, as boutique investment firms increasingly leverage automation to replace the labor-intensive administrative functions traditionally held by large Wall Street institutions.

Finalis, founded in 2020 by former Kirkland & Ellis attorney Federico Baradello, provides the regulatory licensing and compliance framework for these smaller firms. The company reports that it has facilitated $34 billion in transactions to date. Price indicated that the opportunity to apply his regulatory experience toward streamlining information flow and accelerating dealmaking processes drew him to the firm. FINRA officials declined to comment on the departure.
