Under CEO Dan Frumkin, the bank has aggressively reoriented its portfolio. By moving away from lower-margin retail products and focusing on SME, commercial, and specialist mortgage lending, the institution is capturing better returns on its loan book. This shift complements a broader cost-cutting initiative that has seen the workforce reduced by 1,300 positions since the 2023 rescue deal, streamlining operations to drive efficiency.
Metro Bank Profits Surge as Lending Strategy Takes Hold
Metro Bank reported a 34% increase in first-half pre-tax profit, reaching £60.6 million. The lender’s pivot toward high-margin corporate and commercial loans, combined with the tailwind of sustained interest rates, has allowed the bank to outperform its previous year’s result of £45.1 million in a challenging economic landscape.

Despite ongoing geopolitical pressures and economic volatility, the bank remains optimistic about its trajectory. Executives reaffirmed the 2026 growth outlook, pointing to a record lending pipeline and favorable treasury repricing. With the Bank of England maintaining elevated interest rates, Metro Bank expects these higher borrowing costs to continue bolstering interest income through the remainder of the year.
