The rules establish a clear divide between providers who build these models and deployers who integrate them into consumer services. Companies like Meta, which function as both, must now embed machine-readable signals into their outputs. While the mandate provides an exemption for interactions where the presence of AI is self-evident, most digital content requires clear disclosure to prevent deception.
EU mandates mandatory labeling for AI-generated content
As of August 2, the European Union has activated strict transparency requirements under its landmark AI Act. Platforms and developers now face legal obligations to explicitly mark synthetic audio, video, and text, ensuring users can distinguish between human-authored material and content generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence systems.

Regulators hope these standardized indicators will curb the spread of misinformation by helping the public calibrate their trust in online media. The European Commission noted that the rapid proliferation of generative tools makes authenticating content increasingly difficult for the average person. By forcing transparency at the point of interaction, the bloc aims to secure a baseline of digital literacy across all online platforms.
