Microsoft Plans Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility for PC

Microsoft is expanding its cross-platform strategy by enabling developers to port Xbox 360 titles to PC. According to internal documents reviewed by The Verge, the initiative aims to build a unified digital library across next-generation devices, handhelds, and PCs, effectively bridging the gap between legacy console hardware and modern computing environments.

This effort mirrors the portability of Steam, allowing games to circulate across various hardware configurations. The integration is slated for a gradual rollout between 2027 and 2028, aligning with the broader "Project Helix" initiative. Developers will retain autonomy over pricing and Game Pass inclusion for these titles, provided they opt into the backward compatibility program. This move coincides with the scheduled October 2026 full launch of original Xbox games on PC.

Beyond software, the company is addressing the transition away from physical media. Players who own physical discs for Xbox One or Series consoles will be able to register digital licenses tied to their accounts and the original disc. By facilitating these digital conversions, Microsoft is positioning its ecosystem for a future hardware landscape that may lack traditional disc drives entirely, following a similar trajectory already explored by competitors in the gaming space.
